About the Salvia Black and Blue

The Salvia Black and Blue annual bedding plant with stunning blue flowers and black stems for your next flowerbed design. After planting this annual in my garden for the first time last year, I cannot imagine being without this Salvia.

The true 'black' stems are sturdy and the electric blue blooms are incredible and long lasting. Some of the blooms on my plants have been fresh for well over 4 weeks. You can tell when the blooms are spent/finished, they take on a dried appearance and the stems become brittle.

How To Grow the Salvia Black and Blue

The stems are easy to snap off. Doing this helps the plant to keep producing the flower stalks. As the growing season progresses, the plant becomes larger and larger, almost taking on a shrub-like appearance. In most cases it does not need to be staked. Perhaps only if planted in a windy location.

This Salvia Black and Blue is rarely bothered by pests, perhaps aphids but they are easily controlled with a blast of the garden hose.

Because they grow tall, at least 36" to 48" tall when mature, the Black and Blue are great in the center of an island garden or used as the background planted in a linear garden. I usually plant at least three plants together in a cluster. This annual Salvia also makes the grade as a garden specimen planted in a container along with some filler annuals Purple Sweet Potato Vines or the Dusty Miller.

What's not to love!

Great companion plants are: Purple and White Coneflower, Cleome, Morden Roses, or Golden Rod.
