The Salvia Blue Night is another great choice instead of Lavender.
Image taken from my garden July 19, 2009About The Salvia Blue NightThe shrub-like Salvia Blue Night perennial with tall purplish blue spike blooms is a great choice instead of planting the more picky Lavender. This perennial was the 1997 perennial plant of the year. Sometimes called May Night, there is just something about the Salvia plant that I adore. Maybe it's the sturdy stems or the various colored spikes, but I can't seem to get enough of them. Or maybe it's because the deer and rabbits that roam my backyard don't munch on them! How To Grow The Salvia Blue NightThey grow vigorously in any type of soil and are not bothered by any pests. Usually after a two year growth I have a wonderful full shrub-like plant bearing countless blooms. In the spring when the growth begins, I insert a couple of peony rings. This helps keep the plant stalks together and the plant grows in a straight up fashion. I deadhead and the plant just keeps on re-blooming. Once the plant completes its second blooming (probably by the end of August), it is best to cut down the stalks. I make sure that I have the Salvia Victoria Blue planted close by to take over the space. Great companion plants: Salvia Victoria Blue, Scabiosa or the Dusty Miller.
