About the Salvia Lady In Red

Try planting the Salvia Lady in Red annual bedding plant for its sturdy stems, vibrant red tubular blooms and long lasting bloom time. Not to include this plant in my annual garden would be a huge mistake. When considering what variety of Salvia to plant, the Lady in Red is always included as well as the Victoria Blue Salvia or the Salvia Black and Blue.

How To Grow Salvia Lady In Red

The sun loving Lady in Red makes a terrific mid size annual plant in the garden reaching a max height of 24". The red spikes themselves are at least 8" and each plant spreads in a V shape to include at least 3 flowering spikes.

All summer long the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds enjoyed the sweet nectar and I love watching them.

The spikes bloom for a very long time. Eventually the tubular flowers dry and fall off the spikes and the stalks themselves become dry. Cut off the spent stalks right to the base of the plant. The deadheading helps to keep the annual plant blooming and the plant looks fresh and tidy.

Pests rarely bother the Salvia Lady In Red, however if the growing season is too wet, cotton mold can be a problem. Cotton mold looks exactly like small cotton balls at the base of the plant stalk and it slowly moves up the stalk and eventually killing the plant. If this happens take your garden snips and cut off the affected stalk. Disinfect the snips after use.

Great companion plants: Becky Shasta Daisy, Salvia Victoria Blue, Dusty Miller or Dogwood Shrub.
