The Salvia Mystic Spires Gives Long lasting Colour in the Flowerbed Garden...
About The Salvia Mystic SpiresThe Salvia Mystic Spires offers gardeners a compact, true blue bloom colour that lasts all summer and into fall. When shopping for the Salvia Victoria Blue, I came across the Mystic Spires variety. In Winnipeg you can still purchase the Victoria Blue in packs of eight, which is reasonable. The Mystic Spires are sold as single plants. When I say that the Mystic Spires is a compact plant, this reference is used against the Indigo Spires Salvia. The Indigo grows very tall, to 5 feet and requires staking, where the Mystic stays around the 24" or 2 feet mark. The stems on the Mystic are tough and the plant is heavy branching. This means that if you plant at least 3 singles together, within 3 weeks you can achieve the same look as in the above image. Almost a shrub-like appearance. Unlike the Salvia Victoria Blue, the Mystic Spires seems not to be affected by stem rot or Sclerotina White Mold. Last year I lost many of my Victoria Blue Salvias to White Mold. To identify this mold, it usually manifests itself as a white fluffy substance at the crown of the plant. Also called Sage, this annual is considered a perennial in warmer climates such as a zone 7 to 11. In Winnipeg, it's an annual for sure at a zone 3. The bloom stems on the Mystic last for a very long time and the overall bloom time is from May until frost. Remember to snip off the dried bloom stem. This encourages further blooming. How To Plant The Salvia Mystic SpiresWhile many gardeners call this a border plant, I prefer to plant it in the mid garden. I then plant edgers such as the Felicia Daisy, Campanula White or Blue Clips or the Dianthus Arctic Fire. Plant this Salvia in full sun and fertilize every two weeks, especially if planted in containers. Space at least 12" to 15" apart for good air circulation. Water moderately until well established. Once established, the this perennial is considered heat and drought tolerant. Also, once mature the Mystic Salvia attracts bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Additional great companions plants: Dusty Miller, Nelia Argyranthemum, Purple Coneflower or the Echinacea Double Pink.
