Scaevola for hot, dry, windy spots and container gardening....
About the ScaevolaScaevola, an annual bedding plant great for windy spots on balconies and great for hanging baskets and container gardening. Also called the Australian Blue Fan Flower, this annual can be found in many hanging baskets or containers as stand alone plant. I actually suggest to many apartment dwellers to plant the Scaevola in containers as this annual plant can withstand windy and dry conditions. The sturdy branches curve and fan outwards ergo the given name, Fan Flower. The blooms last for a very long time so check it once and a while a snip of the dried branches. How To Plant The ScaevolaWhile I do suggest that this annual is better suited planted alone, planting a tall or mid size annual in the center such as a Dracaena would work as well. I once planted the Blue Wonder variety in mid summer as a temporary groundcover for my garden peninsula. The plant took hold even though the weather had become hot and dry. Pests do not bother this annual, not even the slugs that were hiding underneath the branches. The slugs did enjoy the Petunias. In the image above, I planted the Scaevola in my wine barrels surrounding the tall Brandon Cedars. Also planted in the same barrel were the Vibrant Fuchsia Color Petunias and the Dark Purple Sweet Potato Vines.
