Scotch Moss, A Lush Golden Green Groundcover...

Scotch Moss

About The Scotch Moss

Scotch Moss, a mat-forming evergreen perennial gives a carpet of golden-green foliage and is perfectly planted in three locations at our larger pond's edge.

This fast growing evergreen creeps in between the rocks and boulders making it an excellent choice for a dense and compact groundcover. The chartreuse and yellow coloring add a great contrast to my planted Daylilies, Spring Bouquet and Swamp Milkweed.

The Scotch Moss spreads by creeping stems and can withstand light foot traffic.

How To Grow the Scotch Moss

Thankfully this moss prefers and enjoys being planted in a rich clay soil. I add extra hummus to keep the soil well drained. It also prefers part shade location as full sun can cause some browning.

This moss is not drought tolerant, so keep the soil evenly moist and fertilize once in the spring and then lightly in the fall. Use a liquid fertilizer and pour carefully around the base or underneath the stems if possible. The creeping stems can cause a slight skin irritation in some people so use precaution.

Growing only 1" to 3" tall, it can spread quickly to 12" wide. Pretty tiny white flowers appear in late spring to early summer. Since it is an evergreen plant, this moss is quick to get going in the spring.

Besides planting moss varieties by water features, try planting them as edgers, in alpine gardens, rock walls, rock gardens and even between paving stones.

Other great companions plants: Creeping Jenny, Sedum Angelina or the Sedums Dragon Blood.
