The Shasta Daisy Becky, an all-time favorite daisy for the flower garden design

About The Becky Shasta Daisy

The Shasta Daisy Becky grows very nicely planted in my sun perennial garden. The 2003 perennial of the year, the Becky has sturdy stems, numerous and long lasting blooms. Finding and planting this Becky Daisy was a dream come true. I was on the hunt for a number of years to find a tall and sturdy stemmed daisy. Apparently, the Daisy Alaska also has sturdy stems, however I discovered the Becky last year (2008) and vowed to plant more. Even in this perennials infancy, the thick stems stand straight in the wind. No floppy stems here.

How To Grow The Becky Shasta Daisy

The Shasta Daisy Becky enjoys full sun and is not fussy about soil type thus provides double its size in the first year. Although it will tolerate some shade, I find that the growth is not nearly as fast. Also, a little slow to get going in the spring, so be gardeners must be patient.

Give ample water in the first year and this plant rewards you with at least 10 to 15 blooms per plant in the first year. Remember to deadhead by cutting the long stems right down to the base of the plant.

The Becky Daisy is not bothered by pests, but susceptible to black spot if the weather is cool and wet. Spray with my fungicide recipe found on Gardening Tips page or purchase a commercial fungicide found at any retail garden center.

Two of my Becky Daisies are planted in my middle island garden where the sun shines all day. The third perennial is planted by the pond's edge and the blooms over-hang ever so slightly.

Inter-mixed with the regular garden daisies and surrounded by the Virgina Creeper, this daisy fits well on my peninsula garden's edge.

Companion plants: Purple Coneflower, Double Pink Coneflower, Liatris Blazing Star or Salvia Black and Blue.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
