The Snapdragon annual used as a border plant for the flowerbed garden

Snapdragon annual plant

About The Snapdragon

The Snapdragon annual bedding plant, withstands light frost and is used as a border plant for the flowerbed garden design. Why? As spring arrives the Snapdragon is the perfect annual to start the color in any flowerbed. This annual withstands cooler temperatures and even a light dusting of snow. Perfect for my zone 3 spring gardening.

During my first summer in our new home the three original flower gardens needed more soil amending and therefore I planted most of my flowers rather late. I purchased the last of the Snapdragons at my favorite Garden Center. Because I was concentrating on planting perennials, I needed annuals to 'fill in' the gaps. Taking them home I realized it had been years since I had planted a snapdragon in my flowerbed garden.

How To Grow The Snapdragon

These happened to the dwarf variety, which suited me just fine. This dwarf variety had short stalks of burgundy colored tubular blooms. The blooms were a velvety texture and seemed to bloom forever.

Remember to deadhead the spent blooms and not let the seed pods dry. Frequent deadheading means more blooms.

While pests do not seem to bother the Snapdragon, they are susceptible to a leaf mold if the soil stays too wet.

Companion Plants: Salvia Victoria Blue, Dusty Miller, Verbena, Angelonia or the Ageratum.

Snapdragon Features

  • velvet-textured, tubular flowers
  • pinch the central stem back when the plant gets to about 4" tall. This creates a more bush-like appearance and better blooming
  • I plant only the short stocky or dwarf variety (grows 10" to 12" tall) so I do not pinch back, I do however deadhead to encourage blooming
  • just know this: the more you cut and deadhead, the more blooms you get
  • they make great cut flowers
  • plant in gardens, window boxes or containers
  • plant in full sun. These do not like shade
  • can survive through a light frost
  • bloom from spring into fall
  • can be bothered by mildew if planted too close
  • do not purchase plants that have floppy tops. They have not been hardened off for the garden season
