The Sweet Potato Vines with ornamental leaves and trailing habits for hanging baskets and container planting

About the Sweet Potato Vines

The Sweet Potato Vines have showy ornamental leaves and vigorous trailing habits for use as spillers in hanging baskets or container gardening. Every year I plant the ornamental vines (Ipomoea) in my containers and planter boxes, most times it's the Lime Green and the Blackie variety.

I plant the Lime variety with Petunias, Gazanias, Felicia Daisy or the African Daisy. I have also planted the Lime with the Gartenmeister Fuchsia in pure shade and the containers looked amazing. I have also seen many containers with the Lime Green variety and the zonal Geraniums.

How To Grow the Sweet Potato Vines

These wonderful ornamental cascading vines prefer a well drained soil and should be fertilized every 3 weeks if planted in containers.

While the tags say that it's great for full sun, if the planted area gets too much of the hot sun, the leaves will burn. I find that these trailing annuals are better suited to a part sun location. These annuals do not like to dry out and will wilt or dry brown around the edges. Even moisture is best.

A another warning. Low temperatures are also an issue. If the temperature gets too too cold (frost warnings,) the leaves droop, turn brown and curl up. I had to snip off the affected leaves. Thank goodness the plants do re-bound. As well, if your vines go too rapidly, it never hurts to give it a haircut. And by the way, rabbits really enjoy this trailing annual. If I were to allow it, my bugs would shear off the cascading vines in no time flat!

Other great companions: Bonfire Begonia or Dragon Wing Begonia.

Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.

The Blackie variety has a vigorous trailing habit making it great for hanging baskets and for container plantings. Blackie doesn't grow quite as quickly as the Lime variety and mounds a little before trailing down.

The foliage is dark burgundy black shaped like a maple leaf.

This vine also does not like being in the cold, nor does it like being in direct hot sun. The edges will burn and turn brown.

Both Sweet Potato Vines benefit from regular watering and fertilizing. I normally 'feed' my containers and planter boxes every 3rd watering.
