Thrift Page, Dusseldorf Pride...a Great Edging Evergreen Perennial

Thrift Dusseldorf

About The Thrift Perennial

Thrift, Dusseldorf Pride, sometimes also called Armeria, is an evergreen perennial and perfect as an edging plant or planted in rock gardens. The above image of the Armeria is from my garden taken in June, 2009 alongside the Laminum hugging in behind.

This is evergreen perennial, which does not totally die back during the winter, is one of the first flowerbed greening in the spring.

Because this perennial is slow growing and relatively small, be careful and note that it can get over shadowed in the garden by larger plants and thus not receive the required sun for good blooming.

How To Grow The Thrift Perennial

Growing in clumps, the Dusseldorf prefers a relatively dry, sandy soil. If the soil stays too moist the clump center will rot and die out. This die out also happens with older plants.

Because the Thrift is an evergreen aggressive pruning in the fall is not recommended as this will hamper the blooms for the following season. However, do deadhead throughout the growing season to encourage the blooming period. The first flush of flowers happens in the spring with periodic blooming throughout the summer months.

I do find that the blooming throughout the summer is much fewer than the first flush of springtime blooms.

These plants are native to seaside cliffs (can tolerate some salt) and will do well in any sunny location. Plants form a low tufted mound of grassy green leaves. The Dusseldorf (above) bears deep pink pom pom flowers for many weeks starting in late spring, and usually repeat flowering in the fall. Good rock garden or edging plant. Also excellent in tubs or mixed containers, particularly alpine trough gardens.

Great companion plants: Angelonia, Sedum Dragons Blood, Palm Sedges, Felicia Daisy, Portulaca, Rockcress or the Ageratum Blue Hawaii.
