The Trusty Rusty Coleus, beautiful large copper leaves edged in a golden green color...
About The Trusty Rusty ColeusNew for 2009, my Trusty Rusty Coleus, as seen in the above image from my garden container, has a wider golden green edging. Perhaps this is due to less sunlight as this coleus can be planted in both sun and shade. It was interesting to see this annual coleus planted in other flowerbed gardens in a more sun location and having a narrower rim of golden green edging. And yet, other gardeners have said the complete reverse. They have witnessed the golden green over-powering the large leaf with a bit of copper veining through. Perhaps I will experiment next season with both sun and shade planting of this coleus variety. Blooming later than other varieties, this vigorous grower stands straight in a container and does not really spread too wide. Planting in a container with some Marigolds would make a stunning display. How To Plant the Trusty Rusty ColeusRequiring average soil, a medium amount of water and fertilizing every two weeks, this coleus is trouble free. It can be planted in shade or sun, although some say partial sun is best. The Trusty Rusty reaches a height of 18" to 24" tall and can spread same. While you can plant this annual in regular flowebeds, I chose to plant them in containers, bright orange containers to be exact. This makes a great contrast! Since it mounds slightly and grows upright, plant a spiller like the
Sweet Potato Vine Caroline and perhaps the Lava Rose Coleus or
the Magilla Purple Perilla. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
