The Verbena Adds Brilliant Color To Any Flowerbed Garden
About the VerbenaFor a bright splash of color try planting the Verbena. This annual bedding plant creates that 'extra' zip of continued color in any container or flowerbed garden. The brilliant primrose-like flower clusters of the Verbena catch my eye at every garden centre. I cannot walk past them without picking up at least 6 of the trailing variety (peruviana) for my containers. How To Grow the VerbenaThis annual bedding plant like all others requires snipping off the spent blooms heads (deadheading). If not, it just takes that much longer for new stems to grow and bloom, ergo many people have asked why their plants are not blooming. If you want a bushier upright annual in your flowerbed garden, try pinching out the tips of the new plants prior to planting in the ground. If the annual is under performing towards mid season, it can be cut back and re-grow. The trailing variety does best when planted on its own in a hanging basket. If planted in a container, great companion plants are: Geraniums, African Daisy, Alyssum, Calendula or the Salvia Victoria Blue. Great companion plants for the upright variety: Ageratum Blue Hawaii, Dusty Miller, Alyssum, Ajug groundcover and the Calendula especially if mixed with the Verbena variety Peaches and Cream. Check out my Site Index Page for a listing of additional annuals and perennials to plant in your flower garden design.
