About The Weigela Florida Variegated

For years I have stayed away from the Weigela florida variegated...well not specifically that variety, but Weigela shrubs in general. I had heard horror stories of gardeners who purchased this shrub, only to watch the greenery take form but no blooms.

Many years have passed and my fear of the Weigela shrub has waned. Since the fear had now disappeared, I searched for and found the Variegated variety.

As seen in the above images, this shrub is simply stunning! The leaves, when emerging are oval shaped, a soft green and edged with a creamy white. As the plant matures, the leaves to to a dark green and are edged with a lime green color.

The blooms are amazing. Shaped like a funnel, the flowers open as a cream white and slowly darken to the soft pink. Because of the bloom shape, hummingbirds migrate to the shrub. Flowering in late spring to early summer, this Weigela is know to bloom again in the fall. I was quite surprised to see that my shrub bloomed within 1 month of planting.

This hardy shrub has a dense and quick growth. As it matures, the branches arch and the blooms group in clusters. Quite attractive indeed!

How To Grow the Weigela Florida Variegated

This is a hardy shrub that enjoys a full sun location. There is one caveat to this. If you live in a zone 8/9, you might want to plant in part shade. The intense sun could burn the leaves. My shrub is planted in a part sun location and is doing very well. Planting in a part sun can also result in few flowers and not as fragrant, but I have yet to see this happen.

Once established, this Weigela is drought tolerant, however it does prefer a well drained soil. On hotter days of summer and if planted in full sun, give it some extra water to keep the leaves hydrated. It does not like to dry out.

This florida grows to 4 to 6 feet in height and can spread about 5 feet at maturity. The overall shape of this shrub is round, but can be pruned as desired.

As luck would have it, this hardy shrub is virtually maintenance free. Probably the only real maintenance would be to prune once a year. But please only prune after the first flush of flowers.

Some great companions: Dogwood Shrub, Salvia Mystic Spires or the Cornflower Amethyst In Snow, Garden Roses or the Bellflower Cherry Bells or the Bloomerang Lilac Shrub.
