The Winnipeg Parks Rose, A Hardy Shrub Rose From The Parkland Series...
About The Winnipeg Parks RoseHailing from Morden, Manitoba the Winnipeg Parks rose combines the toughness of surviving the coldest prairie winters, yet offers us the most delicate bright cherry red double blooms on hardy strong stems. With slightly fragrant blooms, the leaves on this shrub rose are disease resistant. The leaf colouring, which is a deep green, also has a tinge of bronze. In the fall, the rose hips are a magnificent red. That alone is worth seeing. The dense growth of the leaves being mildew and black spot resistant, is a wonderment to me. While I do spray (fungicide) my roses in the spring once they leaf out, I am surprised that with all of the rain we have experienced, I have not had any issues. The Winnipeg Parks grows on its own root and seems to be everblooming. No sooner has the first flush of flowers disappeared and I can already see the new buds forming! Remember to deadhead the spent blooms to encourage more flowering, however as the fall approaches stop deadheading and fertilizing, thus allowing the rose hips to form. By the way, when planting, I also add a teaspoon of Myke's a growth hormone. This particular Myke's is for roses. The Winnipeg Parks grows to about 3 feet tall and it has about a 3 foot spread as well. Because of its fullness, it really isn't necessary to under plant this rose. I have mine growing in the middle garden so I do have edging plants. For example: Dusty Miller and the Marigold Durango, however the Felicia Daisy would look very nice as an edger. This shrub rose also makes a great hedging rose as it can withstand urban pollution. Other great companions plants: White Swan Coneflower, Echinacea Double Pink, Endless Love Lily or the Liatris Blazing Star.
